Town Edge Win In Derby

Saturday morning saw a great local derby were Lurgan town would take on Banbridge Town at ballymacoss Lisburn. Both teams were in great form especially Lurgan Town after their convincing 5-0 win over Chimney Corner on Wednesday night. This saw the Lurgan’s defence with their third clean sheet on the bounce and to heighten their confidence it was the first week with a full strength squad after been battling hard with recent injuries. Balfour, Thornbury and McAlinden all returns.

The first half began with Lurgan applying plenty of pressure, this was coming mainly from their left hand side with great link up play by McAlinden, Davison and Gorman playing outstanding football. This eventually led to the break of the deadlock with Davison finding the far corner from the back post after a well delivered ball. 1-0 (18mins). As the half went on both teams were pushing hard and battling with the Lurgan defence dealing with any Banbridge attack comfortably. The 2nd goal came from a great set piece straight from the training ground that paid off. Davison swung in a deep corner from the right hand side to be met by Gorman at the back post, who calmly controlled the ball expertly before slamming it past the goalkeeper from close range. 2-0 (24mins). Following this the momentum changed sides with Banbridge having the chances. But, the Lurgan defence stood strong and some commanding goalkeeping from McCann didn’t allow Banbridge to capitalise before the half.

First Half: Lurgan Town 2-0 Banbridge Town

The start of the second half saw both teams making changes to their starting 11. Banbridge with the swap on their right hand side to try and deal with havoc being cause by Davison. Whilst Lurgan were left unsettled due to the injuries of Balfour and McAlinden especially after their solid first half performance. Soon after the changes again it was Lurgan who struck, with a great cross from Dobrowolski which lead to a deflection of the Banbridge defender and into the net. 3-0 (38mins). Soon after this the game began to heat up with a few heavy tackles from the Banbridge side with even one player striking out at Gorman in midfield which went unpunished by the ref.. Soon after Lurgan failed to clear their lines leading to a chance which was well finished by the Banbridge player from close range. 3-1 (45mins). With the game coming to a close chances from Krol and Davison could of killed the game and Dillon who forced a great save one on one from the Banbridge goalkeeper. Finally it took a great push from the makeshift defence to keep out Banbridge’s final efforts with Sloane and Pedlow filling in for the two injured lads in unnatural positions and dealing with the constant pressure comfortably
