The Mid Ulster Football League has ruled that all senior leagues for the 2020/21 season have been ruled void. In a statement the MUFL said:
“At a committee meeting on Monday 1st March 2021, the prior Mid Ulster Football League management committee recommendation notice to void the 2020-21 season was considered further after responses from the member teams.
Following overwhelming support by the teams the recommendation was ratified by a unanimous decision by the committee to void the 2020-21 season.
The committee would like to place on record its thanks to all clubs for their patience as this was not an easy decision to make for the League”.
Our three senior team managers had this to say about the decision.
Lee Dickson – Unfortunately, we see another season fall victim to Covid 19. Personally I think it’s the right decision to void this year’s competition and keep the leagues the same for the forth coming 2021/22 season. We all wanted to return and a part of me wonders why it couldn’t go beyond a certain date, however, with the current pressures within hospitals and the strain on everyday life within our country, I fully support the majority vote made by the member clubs.
From a football point of view, given the completion date of the league, it would have been very difficult to get the boys up to match fitness and deliver high standard performances in 17 remaining games to be successful, while matching our goals, inside a ridiculously short window of 8 weeks without consequences of injury, and possible risk of infection. Everyone wanted to return to football as it’s a massive part of our lives, but let’s do it in a safe and sensible way, that will protect our families first and foremost.
Hopefully we will see some light at the end of the tunnel over the next few months, as I know it’s been hard for every member of the squad and management.
In the meantime, I hope everyone can stay safe, follow the measures in place to hopefully get us out of this nightmare and get us back on the pitch again with a smile on our face, sooner rather than later.
Keith Lunn – The right decision has been reached in the end and thankfully it appeared to be unanimous. I think we can all agree that the safety of everyone within the Mid Ulster footballing community and beyond is still of paramount importance. Not only that, but taking this step has ensured we get back to normality sooner rather than later.
Eric and I are very excited about getting pre season started in the next few months and hope to build on the foundations implemented during an albeit short but very promising first season.
Phil McKinley – The Swifts kicked off the season in Reserve Div 2 but were finding it tougher than the previous 2 seasons. They competed well but were on the wrong end of the results. Then COVID Restrictions kicked in so the young players didn’t get the chance to continue their development in a very competitive league.
The decision by the MUFL to null and void the season was the correct decision however I do know the players have been missing the game. They will be excited to get back when restrictions are lifted.
