Ladies Progress In Super Cup

The inaugural NIWFA ‘Kerr Insurance Group’ Super Cup competition is open to all NIWFA clubs, but with Championship teams entering at Round 3.  In their first Super Cup match, Lurgan Town Ladies were drawn away to fellow Championship side, East Belfast Ladies.

The games started with both sides testing their opposing keeper from distance, but early efforts by Louise O’Neill, Kerry Taggart and Elisha Donnelly were either off-target or else saved by the keeper. After 6 minutes, Lurgan keeper Megan McCabe almost had an assist, when Elisha latched on to her long kick-out, and looped a shot towards goal off the outside of her foot, but it bounced agonisingly off the crossbar.

New signing Aoibhean Jones made a great run up the wing, and her cross almost found the head of KT, but the keeper intercepted it.  While Lurgan were creating chances and winning corners, East Belfast could be dangerous on the counter-attack, and a shot from distance on the half-hour mark forced a fine save from Megan, who palmed it onto the crossbar.

KT then made a lovely run up the pitch with the ball, but her shot was pushed round the post.  Lurgan then won a succession of corners, but were unable to convert any, and the first half finished 0-0.

In the second half, there were early chances at both ends, but Lurgan upped their game, and had the most possession.  10 minutes in, and Elisha played KT through for a chance on goal, but somehow despite a number of chances, the ball didn’t cross the line, and went out for a corner.  The corner was half-cleared, but only as far as Jonesy, whose shot dipped just over the bar. Then, midway through the half, Jonesy’s cross to the feet of Leanne Domican was struck firmly into the net, to break the deadlock, and give the visitors a 0-1 lead.

Lurgan continued to press, with some great interplay between Jonesy and Elisha, but the cross to KT got caught up in her feet.  KT soon made amends with a shot that hit the post, and then ricocheted off the keeper for a corner.  Tracy Orr was able to keep the half-cleared corner in play, and she crossed for Elisha to score her overdue goal, and make it 0-2.  Amy McAllister and Teah Maguire came on to provide fresh legs as Lurgan looked to seal their victory.

Well done to everyone, from the solid back five, to the tireless midfielders and wingers, and the battling forwards! Thank you also to our match sponsors, Ivan & Stella Black.

The Super Cup Quarter Final will take place at Lurgan Town Arena on Monday 29 July, against Lisburn Rangers Ladies.
