Lurgan Town u19s hosted Cookstown yesterday on a wet morning at the Arena. Lurgan started the first half on the front foot but this wasn’t to last as Cookstown started to get a grip of the game. Lurgan’s plan was to frustrate their opponents then change it up in the second half. This was working well until Cookstown took a well deserved lead and went in ahead at half time.
Lurgan made 4 changes at the break and changed to a more attacking formation. This worked a treat and lurgan soon equalised with a well worked goal that Niall McBride finished with composure. Lurgan were now turning the screw with the defence holding firm marshalled by Captain Morgan and the midfield were now getting on top with Adam Leathem, Adam Hodgkinson, Denver Elliott and Alex woods all put a shift in.
The winning goal came from the midfield who played in the ever available McBride to cross with his left foot for debutant Fionan Dunbar to slot the ball home 2-1 Town.
Lurgan kept pushing forward and were unlucky not to score another couple of goals forcing the Cookstown keeper into numerous saves. Lurgan nearly paid the price for missed opportunities when Cookstown broke only for Town’s keeper Joshua Pugh to save to his right and parry the ball onto his own post and lucky for Town it came straight back to the keeper.
The team showed great passion and determination to win the game which was showed by all players especially Oliver Miller and motm Adam Leathem. Well done to all involved. Onwards and upwards team.
