Lurgan Town U14s played Newry City in the Lisburn league at the Barbour on Sarurday morning & came away with a hard fought 1 – 0 win.
In very windy conditions Town & Newry put on a good display of football for the spectators. Newry had the lions share of possession in the first half but it was Lurgan who had the 1st real chance when a Calhoun corner was swung into the six yard box were Suchonski & Cassells both had shots blocked before the ball was scrambled away to safety for Newry.
With the Lurgan defence of Simpson, Cassells, Browne & Calvert holding firm for the 1st 25 mins with the wind in their faces it wasn’t long until keeper Whitmarsh was called into action with 3 brilliant saves in the last 10 mins of the 1st half. Two of the saves were finger tipped over the bar from shots & the other a great block from point blank range. Lurgan had another chance from a corner just before half time when Calhoun delivered into the 6 yard box again this time McGlade’s shot was blocked & the ball fell to feet of stokes just outside the 18 yard box who’s great curling effort went just over the bar. That’s how the half ended with the score at 0 – 0.
The 2nd half started with Lurgan on the front foot & with the wind at their backs now they were starting to dominate play with Murray, Suchonski, Calhoun, Sprought & Moore running the midfield the chances were starting to come thick & fast. McGlade, Finlay & Moore all tested the Newry keeper from distance but 15 mins into the 2nd half the dead lock was broken when a long throw from Sprought found Cassells on the penalty spot & with great control he played the ball to the back post were Murray made no mistake from close range. 1 – 0 up now the boys pushed on & could have made it 2 – 0 when Emerson & Vennard both had good shots at Newry goal saved.
Newry had no really answer for the strong wind in their faces & it really was a game of 2 halves because of the wind. The game finished 1 – 0 to Lurgan Town. Well done lads for a hard fought win in poor conditions.
