Lurgan U19’s had their first league match on Saturday against local rivals Craigavon City. A rainy day saw the game being played on a 3G pitch and a new formation, never tried before, 4-3-3.
Lurgan started the stronger but were soon behind caught out by a cross come shot. A cruel way to go down 1 nil. Our 3 midfielders of Adam H, Oliver and Simon tormented the City midfield and their defence. Simon slid a ball into Alex Woods whose shot rolled across the top of the crossbar.
We were seeing a different side to Lurgan today not normally seen. Competitive, disciplined, working hard, hard in the tackle and when losing the ball closing down to retrieve it. The defence used the experience gained from an earlier clash with City in the league cup and handled and frustrated the strikers never giving them an opportunity. 1 nil half time.
Second half City changed personnel and started more on the front foot, however this didn’t seem to affect how Lurgan approached the game. Still competitive and matching physically. Lurgan created two chances one to Niall and the other to Jamie who shot narrowly wide. A long ball from City and they went two up, soon after that 3 and then 4.
The scoreline did not deter the lads who kept their discipline and saw out the game. A bitterly disappointing result because the U19’s matched the league champions and outplayed them for much of the game. Lesson learnt be more clinical. But apart from that many positive signs and if we play like that against other lesser teams we will not be too far off.
