U19s Win In Savage Cup

Lurgan Town played their second match in the league cup against Rossowen.  The opponents were a big physical team and like ourselves liked to play football.

The Game kicked off and Rossowen used their height and physicality to try and cause the Town defence problems but they handled whatever was fired at them.  As Town absorbed the pressure they had chances to go ahead. The best opportunity fell to Simon who had a split second to decide to chip the oncoming keeper or to try a low shot; he went for the former and beat the keeper but unfortunately for it clipped the top of the net.  This came from an attack down the right involving Matthew and Adam Leatham.  Most of  the attacks came down the flanks, stretching the Rossowen defence.

During an attack down the left by Rossowen, the ball fell to Alex who tried a back pass back to Joshua, unfortunately this was under hit and even though Joshua made a sterling effort to save the shot the ball made it’s way across the goalmouth for a Rossowen player to tap in.

Lurgan grabbed the initiative won a corner and Lewis drove a great ball which passed over their keeper to find Niall at the back post who slotted the ball into the back of the net.  Rossowen had led for 3 minutes. Lurgan continued to carve out openings with Niall, Simonm, Matthew and Adam going close. Rossowen won a corner and from that scored their second. Players not tracking their runners led to an easy header to be slotted home.

Again Lurgan took the game to Rossowen and equalised within 10 minutes.  Again down the right involing a ball out of defence from Adam to Matthew who played the ball to Adam L who drove forward and played a one-two with the Simon who charged into the box and slotted the ball home neatly passed the keeper.  2 each.

The second half followed the same pattern of the first.  Rossowen using their physicality and long balls and Lurgan absorbing the pressure.  Although some of the tackles being made by Rossowen now warranted yellow cards. Lurgan’s break through came with 20 minutes left when from a corner the ball fell to Adam who drove a shot towards from outside the box.  It was partially deflected, a race between Niall and the keeper and Niall managed to slot a weak shot under the keeper.  The ball trickled towards the goal line and an on rushing defender attempted to clear but only managed to push the ball over the line.  3-2 Lurgan.

Good win, Lurgan coped with the aggressive and physical side of the game and played some good football.
