Lurgan Town U13s took on Cliftonville at The Barbour Playing Fields on Saturday and came away with a narrow 3-2 win with goals from TJ Sheridan, Noah Gorman and Daryl Houston.
Lurgan started the better of the two in the opening ten minutes of the game however, a very physical Cliftonville soon began to dictate proceedings taking a well deserved 1 nil lead, with some excellent attacking football. Cliftonville should have doubled their lead with a deliberate foul in the box which led to a penalty. Fortunately, for Lurgan the striker blazed his shot over the bar.
This seemed to waken Lurgan again and just on the close of half time TJ Sheridan got on the end of a nice through ball and levelled the match.
Half Time 1-1
Lurgan introduced Noah Gorman into the game and it wasn’t long before he made his mark on the game with a nice finish following a goal mouth scramble. Lurgan were matching Cliftonville physically all over the pitch and this seemed to lift the tempo of the game. Lurgan bombarded the Cliftonville backline with constant pressure, and then with a nicely worked corner kick Daryl Houston delivered a high cross that the keeper couldn’t hold and Lurgan were now 3-1 up and coasting.
As the game neared its end Cliftonville seemed to get a second wind and they came at Lurgan scoring a great free kick making it 3-2. It was a nervy end for the young Lurgan team who seemed to take their foot off the pedal but fortunately they came home with 3 points.
Although Lurgan got the win, it was a story of missed chances galore. Lurgan will need to improve greatly in the coming weeks.
Lurgan Town would also like to send a Get Well Soon message to the young Cliftonville player who was taken off with a bad head injury toward the end of the game.
