Impressive Derby Win

Town made the short journey to Portadown to play St Mary’s and returned with 3 points after an impressive 8-1 victory. However it was st Mary’s who took the lead after some nervous opening play from town. A back pass was quickly closed down from the St Mary’s forward and put Town’s keeper under pressure. This lead to the opening goal and gave Town the wake up call they needed after a slow start.

Town settled into the game and started to play football. After some good link up play a wide run from Kyle White took away the defender creating space for Josh Johnston to unleash a thunderbolt from the edge of the box which sailed into the top corner of the net leaving the keeper no chance. Town were now finding their form and further goals from Ben Cullen and Mackenzie Craig gave them a comfortable 3-1 lead at half time.

Town started the 2nd half with a change in personnel. Ronan Watkins, Spencer Young and Ethan Gorman coming on in a new look attack, and it wasn’t long before they made an impact. A great run and powerful shot from Gorman brought a fine save from the opposition keeper who could only parry the ball into the path of the opportunistic Watkins who finished well to take his tally to 2 goals in 2 games. At 4-1 Town were in complete control, and continued to create chances with Spencer Young and Mackenzie Craig both going close and Adam Vennard hitting the bar with a long range effort. Craig and Johnston both doubled their tally for the day with Mac unlucky not to complete his hatrick when he met a superb cross from Gorman only to see his header go narrowly wide. Kyle Thompson was solid throughout and his wicked crosses troubled St Mary’s time and time again.  Spencer Young got his name on the scoresheet after some fine forward play and Ethan Gorman completed the rout with a superb solo effort. Town finished with a flurry after a slow start and while the end result was pleasing the boys must learn from their early scare and take more ownership of the ball in the early stages of the games. Another great team performance by the boys and another 3 points earned.
