Lurgan Town went down 4-2 in tonight’s Mid Ulster Intermediate B clash against Lower Maze. It was not a vintage display by Town with the game turning in the second period on two magnificent strikes from the Maze number 9. Town had the first chance of the game when the keeper saved well from an Ashley Gregg effort on 3 minutes. 4 minutes later and Ziggy Gargasas failed to cut his cross back and Lower Maze went up the other end and fizzed a shot over the bar.
On 10 minutes, a Maze free kick was not properly cleared and Tyler Boyce made a great double save. Soon after Lower Maze hit the post, when they really should have scored, and Town went up the other end to open the scoring through Ashley Gregg. Poor defending let Lower Maze back in to it on 19 minutes, but Town once again took the lead. Ziggy Gargasas poking home following great work by Henry Capper on the left hand side.
It was clear to see that Lower Maze were trying to turn the Town defence on every opportunity with the long ball and Town eventually dealt with it much better. Town had three more opportunites to extend their lead before the half, but they could not find the killer touch in front of goal. It remained 2-1 to Town at half time.
Chances were few and far between in the first 20 minutes of the second period. But the game changed on the 65 minute when Maze scored an absolute screamer of an equaliser. The number 9 cutting in from the right and bending it into the top corner from 25 yards out. The same player put the home side in the lead with a carbon copy of his first just 10 minutes later and this knocked the wind out of the Town sails. Maze added another before the end to make it 4-2.
A difficult night for Town, but they can take heart that only 5 players were in the squad that beat Maze 7-2 in the same fixture last season. This is a new team that are still learning from each other. There is no doubt that Lee Dickson and Paul Mercer will be working hard in training with the lads to rectify the result. Man of the Match – Tyler Boyce.
Team: Boyce, McIvor, Bann, Adams, McNally, Wiltshire, Glenn, Gargasas, Gregg, Heaney, Capper
Subs: Carson, Hamilton, Smylie
Next up Town travel to Tullyvallen on Saturday who beat Camlough Rovers 4-1 in their game tonight.
