Town Reserves played their final home game of the season against AFC Silverwood Reserves in the league on Saturday. The Arena was bathed in sunshine and there was a large crowd down to see the League Champions lift their trophy after the match. Even with the title in the bag already the lads wanted another three points to go along with it.
The first half was full of attacking football from both sides but it was the home side who opened the scoring. Jack Evans is in unbelievable goalscoring form, and he smashed home an opener after turning his man inside out. AFC equalised after their striker headed home after a quick counter attack. The end to end attacking continued and Town retook the lead when Matt Irvine slotted home from inside the area. But straight away an equaliser arrived from AFC when they converted from a set piece. Just before half time the visitors, who are scrapping for second place, took the lead for the first time in the game when their striker looped one home from the edge of the box. Half Time 2-3.
A slight tactical tweak and the introduction of Andrew Houston saw Town take the game to AFC from the whistle, and they were back on level terms quickly. Andy McIvor started the half on fire, dominating midfield. He won the ball and drove forward to unleash a fierce drive that hit the bar, but the rebound was buried by Jack Evans before anyone else could react. AFC were then reduced to ten men after an off the ball foul on McIvor and Town made the extra man count. Houston drove down the right hand side and pulled the ball back for Irvine to smash home from 16 yards.
The lads made many more chances but couldn’t capitalise, with Woods, Trainor and Glenn going close. The defence did their job, superbly marshalled by Matthew Bann, and kept AFC out to close out the win. After the match the league trophy was presented to captain David Trainor by our outgoing First Team Manager Chris Kelly.
The team would like to thank everyone at Lurgan Town – players, committee, club house staff and other coaches for helping throughout the season. Massive thanks to Carsy and Badger for the BBQ and celebrations, and Scott for the photos and write ups. Roll on pre season!!!
