U19s Through To Semis

under19 mid ulster 1718The U19s travelled to Markethill on Saturday to play Markethill Swifts in the quarter final of the Isaac Gilkinson Cup. The game was played in perfect weather conditions and the pitch was in good shape. Lurgan went into the game knowing they would be in for a tough game against an improving Markethill team. However, it was Lurgan that took the lead when Andy McIvor scored with a super finish after good play involving Lewis McKinley and Aaron Winters. Lurgan’s midfield and defenders went to sleep for a few seconds which allowed Markethill to equalise. Then just before the halftime whistle Markethill were reduced to 10 men after their midfielder left a late tackle on Andy McIvor.

Lurgan started the second half numerically one player better of but Markethill scored a breakaway goal despite being a player down. This kicked Lurgan into action and were creating numerous great scoring chances but Aaron Winters and Callum Watkins couldn’t put the ball in the net. Lurgan made 3 changes in the half and it was Odhran Crozier that had a massive influence in the last 20 plus minutes as he had a super shot saved then set up a couple of chances for his teammates. There were 5 minutes left on the watch and Lurgan looked to be heading out of the cup but Andy McIvor hit a shot towards goal that finished with Aaron Winters getting the final touch. The game was now heading for extra time but Aaron Winters had different ideas when he scored passed the keeper and to kill the game off Odhran Crozier was fouled in the box to win a penalty which Andy McIvor scored with ease.

Credit to all the players for never giving up as they scored 3 in the last 5 minutes. There were a few good individual performances with Lewis McKinley showing up well before coming of injured, Brett Smyth improved as the game went on, Odhran Crozier was superb when he came on but player of the match and possibly a 10 our 10 performance went to Timmy Millen. Tim give an all action performance in defence, midfield and an attacking threat. Also, credit to Markethill as all their players give 100% effort and will feel hard done by as they almost held out for the victory.
