Lurgan Town U13 girls returned to 9 aside league football on Friday night with a top of the table clash against Banbridge Rangers. The team have gained confidence from winning the futsal tournament the previous week.
Lurgan knew it was going to be a tough night against a strong Banbridge team however Lurgan controlled a lot of the game. Despite this Banbridge were still dangerous on the counter attack. Chloe Stewart, Blathnaid Duffy, Kaitlyn Irwin were excellent in defence. Lurgans midfield of Alex McILwaine, Ellie McBride, Maeve McConaghy and Amy Irwin were a constant threat along with Katie Gilmore. The first goal was going to be crucial and it was Maeve scoring with a well placed shot. A second was soon to follow and it was Maeve again with the goal after an assist from Katie Gilmore. The third was unfortunate for a Banbridge Rangers defender as a Maeve corner deflected of the defender to give Lurgan a three nil half time lead.
Lurgan made changes with Nicole Owens and Erin Moore coming on. There were more chances for Lurgan to score but it wasn’t until mid way through the half that a fourth arrived. Maeve McConaghy scored a direct free kick from 20 yards to score her hattrick. Banbridge pressed for a goal but Chloe and Blathnaid were super in defence. Occasionally Banbridge got a few shots on target they found JP unbeatable.
All the girls deserve credit, however Maeve and Alex played with slight injuries. Also a couple of girls had ran in the schools cross country earlier in the day so energy levels were a little low. Despite this the team picked up a great win.
