Town Reserves travelled to Coagh to take on their unbeaten reserve side from the division above in the cup on Saturday. Town were coming off the back of some superb wins but were forced to come into the game without last weeks front three, including top scorer Irvine. This meant a first start for Jamie McNeill and a debut for Callum Watkins, alongside Aaron Winters. Josh Pugh also made the squad making his debut off the bench.
The first half started well with a lot of quality on show from both sides, Gray driving forward from midfield well for Town and Kidd playing as a sweeper keeper mopping up some through balls from Coagh. It was Coagh that opened the scoring when a well worked move found the striker bearing down on goal, and despite Kidd making a brilliant save, the ball came back off the post and fell to a Coagh player to fire home.
Town pushed for an equaliser before half time and the Coagh keeper had to be alert to push away a stinging drive from Gray. From the resulting corner the ball was cleared off the line after a desperate scramble. The half ended with Watkins cutting in from the left and his shot was deflected over with the Coagh keeper beaten. Half Time 1-0.
The second half was disappointing from a Town point of view. Errors crept into their game for the first time in a number of weeks and Coagh were ruthless in punishing anything that fell their way. Coagh extended their lead when Town failed to deal with a ball over the top and the striker finished well. Soon after the game was over as a contest as Town pushed men forward they were hit on the counter attack. Gray came close with a free kick for Town but the game fizzled out after that when Town lost Luke Glenn to a dislocated shoulder and they saw the game out with ten men. Coagh grabbed another before the end to finish strongly and grab a deserved place in the next round.
A lesson for the Town lads in how individual errors are punished at the higher level that they are aspiring to play at next season.
