Yesterday the U17’s were at home to Raithfriland who had already beaten them earlier in the season. Lurgan started on the offensive and were constantly testing their opponents defence with some slick passing and off the ball movement. This resulted in Niall being one on one with their keeper on two occasions but was blown for offside on both occasions, both of which were very debatable.
Defence, midfield and front line all linked up well and in one occasion Morgan Symth drove from the centre of his own defence into the middle if the park, off loaded the ball to the winger who returned to him on the 18 yard line but unfortunately his shot was blocked for a corner.
The opening goal came when the ball broke from defence to Denver Eillott on the right wing who drove the ball across the 18yard box for Joshua Pugh to slide home. Nothing that the lads didn’t deserve. Raithfriland on the very few occasions that they broke the Town defensive line of Morgan, Ollie , Travis and Our found Rivaldo in nets who dealt with them easily and turned defence into attack.
Lurgan started the second half slowly and invited pressure on to themselves. Eventually the midfield duo of Adam Hodgkinson and Adam Leatham wrestled the initiative back for the Town. Niall was fed the ball on the left wing and he took on full back and the covering player. Going between the two he was up ended in the box – PENALTY. Niall placed the ball on the spot and confidentially slotted the ball home. Lurgan continued to press for a third and when Jamie played the ball to Simon who struck it beautifully first time, the ball swerved in the air and struck the post.
Raithfriland, on a rare attacking occasion won a corner. As the ball was drove across it caught in the blustering wind to deceive the keeper who in vain tried to make up for his mis-judgement but was unable to keep the ball out. Unlucky Rivaldo. 2-1. A third for Lurgan followed shortly after and it was the best of the bunch. Jamie McNeill was played through with the on coming keeper charging out, and from about 20yards he delicately lobbed the ball over him to land in the back of the net. 3-1.
Lurgan were again soon on the attack. Niall was played through with only the full back and covering player to beat. As Niall went past the covering player he was taken out with a late challenge. Niall took exception to the challenge and in the melley that followed both players were sent off. Unlucky Niall but you cannot take the law into your own hands. The final whistle followed and a good strong team performance all round right from defence through midfield and up to the forwards.
MOTM: Very hard to call and goes jointly to Adam Leatham who terrorised the defence and Adam Hodgkinson whose link up play between the forwards and defence was excellent. Well done all.
Team: Rivaldo, Morgan, Ollie, Travis, Jay, Denver, Adam L, Adam H, Niall, Matthew, Simon, Jamie and Joshua.
