U13s Win Lisburn Shield

Lurgan Town U13s played Windmill Stars in the final of the Lisburn Shield yesterday at Stanley Park & won 1 – 0 picking up the 1st peice of silverware of the

season.

The match started with both teams looking a bit nervy but that was only to be expected with the occasion but within 5 mins both teams had settled & were knocking the ball about with ease. With the wind at their backs it was Windmill who had the 1st chance but town’s keeper Jack Calvert dealt with the long range shot well

.

Town had their 1st chance of the game when Jamie Stringer won the ball in midfield. He played the ball out right to Dylan Alexander who whipped in a great cross but Shea Murphy scuffed his shot straight at the Windmill keeper. Within minutes Town should have taken the lead when Adhamh Towe hit a 30 yard free kick which the Windmill keeper could only push against his crossbar & the rebounding ball landed on the head of Dylan Alexander but he headed it straight at the keeper

.

Windmill had a couple of half chances before the end of the half with 3 corners in a row but town’s defence of Krisy Cassells, Patryk Suchonski, Ethan Browne & Conan Moore were standing firm. The 1st half ended with the score at 0 – 0 .
The 2nd half started with Town going at it straight from the whistle with Towe & Stringer pulling the strings in the middle of the park it wasn’t long before Shea Murphy had the best chance of the game when Towe lifted a pass over the Windmill defence for Murphy to run onto, he took a touch & let fly with a bullet of a shot that just went narrowly wide with the Windmill keeper well beaten

.

Town were dominating play now & it looked like it was just a matter of time before they got their goal. It was Andrew Orr’ s turn to go close when he hit a rasping shot from just outside the box but the Windmill keeper pulled of a great save getting his finger tips to the ball & turning it over. Dylan Emerson & Shea Murphy both had shots just wide after that. The goal did come from a penalty when a Krisy Cassells throw in went to the superb Stringer just inside the box only for a windmill defender to come straight through the back of him & give the penalty away. It was the man of the match Adhamh Towe’s job to step up & coolly slot the penalty into the top left corner of the net making the score 1 – 0

.

With 8 mins left town changed the shape of the team putting an extra man in midfield knowing that Windmill were going to throw everything at them. They set a little deeper & were soaking up the windmill pressure & counter attacking really well & should have killed the match off when Luke Vennard found Jamie Stokes down the right wing he played Shea Murphy in on goal only for Windmill’s man of the match keeper to save well down to his left

.

With time running out Town held firm & saw the game out to win the Lisburn Shield. A lot of credit has to go to a determined & hard working Windmill Stars team for their part in a very entertaining

final.

A big thanks to all the Lurgan Town boys for all there efforts all season so far .
