Town Reserves traveled to Kernan to take on Craigavon City in the league. The pitch was in terrible condition but the team were happy to play the match and try and make up for dropped points from the previous week.
Decent football was hard to come by in the first half, the only moment of real quality being Craigavon taking the lead, their centre half smashing home from 25 yards after a corner was only half cleared. When it looked like the team were going to head into the break a goal down Matt Irvine came up trumps to grab an equaliser that probably wasn’t deserved given the balance of play. Half time 1-1.
Town got the message to up the tempo in the second half, and get their strikers into the game. The team responded well when the returning Aaron Winters slotted home at the back post to put his team ahead soon after the restart.
The lead was extended when a well worked short corner was delivered by Canning for Ryan McMahon to head home at the near post. But just as Town thought they’d done enough to kill the game off, Craigavon replied with a set piece header of their own.
Instead of this motivating Craigavon to get back into the game, Town responded by stepping up another gear and Aaron Winters grabbed his second of the game arriving from the left wing.
The game finished with Town plying some great football. Jamie McNeill, making only his second appearance for the Senior Town teams, scored his second goal at this level after superb link up with Irvine, the strikers exchanging passes 3 times before McNeill smashed passed the keeper.
The best was saved to last however. Ryan McMahon grabbed his second of the game when he spotted the keeper off his line and from all of 50 yards he volleyed the ball over his head for a goal of the season contender. A good second half performance keeps the unbeaten run in the league going, and sets the team up nicely for a cup game away to Coagh next week.
