Lurgan Town FC fielded an 11 aside girls team for the first time in the clubs history. An U15 side played neighbours Craigavon City in the quarter final of the Winter Cup on a cold Thursday night in Drumgor.
The squad consisted 14 players of which 10 were U13 players. The game started with both teams finding their feet as both had never played 11 aside. However Lurgan started strong and it was Kelly Patterson to get the clubs first ever goal at girls 11 aside. Her partner in crime Ellie McBride soon got the second then Kelly was on target again with Lurgans third. Maeve McConaghy was causing problems for the Craigavon defence and after a few close efforts she got her first of the night. A fifth goal came before the end of the half when midfield playmaker Alex McILwaine scored.
A bit like the first half Lurgan started strong and the next goal came from Kayla McGrory. There were a further four goals with Maeve McConaghy adding two to complete her hat-trick which give her the honour of the first player to score 3 at this level. The other two goals were scored by the impressive Rebecca Wilson with a long range effort and Kayla McGrory getting a second. Katie Gilmore was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet. Craigavon pressed in the last ten minutes but Jessica Pugh kept her clean sheet. Jessica was well supported by Chloe, Amy, Kaitlyn, Nicole and Ellie B.
Credit to the Craigavon players as they worked hard despite the result. Lurgan will face a strong Banbridge Rangers side in the semi final. All the players can be proud of their performance and it would be unfair to select a player of the match.
