Town Reserves kicked off their Wilmor Johnston Cup campaign against Broomhedge Maghaberry at the Arena. This was the first match in 3 weeks for Town so a little ring rust was was to be expected, but the team got into their stride early to blow the cobwebs off.
Matt Irvine got the ball rolling when he turned in the box to curl home his first of the game. Broomhedge got an equaliser soon after, capitalising on some sloppiness but Town didn’t let this hinder them and they regained the upper hand quickly. Matt Irvine, again, with a great finish, slotting low and hard past the keeper from 20 yards.
The third came when Houston was released in behind the defence and he rounded the keeper and finished into the empty net. The 1st half scoring was completed with a contender for goal of the season. Some good 1 touch passing in midfield released Houston down the right, he beat the fullback and stood a cross up into the middle. Jack Evans arrive at pace and met the ball full on the volley from 12 yards and watched as it crashed in off the post and bar. Half time 4-1 to Town.
The second half began with Town raising the tempo and on the hunt for more goals. Houston had a header ruled out for offside but he didn’t have to wait long for his second of the game, running on to a cross field pass and guiding a volley into the far post. Soon after he hit the bar from 25 yards, unlucky not to complete the hat trick.
A hat trick did arrive for Town however, Matt Irvine completing his with another stunning goal. The finish was a curling lobbed effort after a pullback on the right hand side of the box. It was despatched over the keeper who could just stand and admire, fantastic goal.
Town then lost Bunting to injury and with all 3 subs used had to see out the last 20 minutes with 10 men. Broomhedge capitalised by pulling one back from a set piece but it was Town who completed the scoring when Irvine slotted home a penalty for his fourth and his teams seventh.
