Lurgan Town U14 Predators were back in action this week hoping to build on last weeks winning performance. The boys found themselves making the trip to Castlecaulfield to face Ardstraw in the first of 4 league cup games to be played over the coming weeks. Town found themselves in good positions early in the game to test the opposition keeper and it wasn’t long before they took the lead through a Josh Johnston special. Ardstraw found themselves pinned back in their own half in the early stages trying to hit Town on the break when possible, which worked for them only 5 minutes after Lurgan had taken the lead. A loose ball was picked up in the midfield and was thumped over the top for the Ardstraw striker who took off like Usain Bolt leaving the Town defence in his wake finishing with power in the Town net. Lurgan again took the lead with Josh getting his brace but almost immediately Ardstraw again equalised when the Ardstraw striker slipped the ball past the Lurgan defence and used his pace to pull away to get his second of the game. Lurgan pulled ahead once more just before the break when Ronan Watkins collected a pass on the left and shook off a couple of players before finishing with ease.
Despite being 3-2 up at halftime Lurgan were playing well below their capabilities with the first half being a very scrappy affair. The defence had to find a way to deal with the pace of the opposition forward or they would quickly find themselves in a tit for tat goal fest. Lurgan started the second half brightly getting on the ball and began to play with more confidence and poise especially in the middle of the park, strangling the source feeding the 2 goal opposition striker. Once they had a grip on the game they made sure they kept it and kept it in style they did with the goals coming quickly in succession. Josh Johnston bagged himself another 3, Ronan another 4, Kyle White slammed home a half volley from 12 yards out and then added to that when he reacted fastest to a ball the Ardstraw keeper spilled from a James Maguire free kick putting the ball in the net before anyone else even got a chance to move, Cameron Mackay and Ricardo Arujo rounded off the goals for Lurgan who headed back down the motorway with a 14-2 victory under their belts.
Well done to the boys with the result and despite the high scoring win there where lessons to be learnt by the Town team today. The boys readjusted themselves well as the game went on to nullify the opposition threat before finishing the game in style. Most importantly of all though was watching the boys over the past couple of weeks playing their football with a smile on their faces once again. That is what it is all about.
