Hard Fought Draw For U17s

Lurgan Town U17s were away yesterday with a tough test at Newry City who have been flying high in the league. Lurgan were depleted in numbers with sickness and injuries taking their tole. Town set up up with a 4-5-1 formation with a very strong middle of the park. They lost the toss and played into the wind the first half and to be honest it did not really bother them. Town were tough in the tackle, strong in defence and in the middle of the park where they dominated. Opprtunites for Newry were non existent and those for Lurgan were limited but the approach play was good and the half chances created were either just wide or saved by the keeper.

The second half personnel were changed with Gary Judt coming back from injury but was taken off after 5 minutes still showing discomfort from the injury. Newry started off with an intensity which was missing from their first half display which resulted in a change of formation to a 4-4-2 and also to help Jack up front who had a thankless task of leading the line by himself. Newry scored first with a ball crossed into the box where one of their defenders swung a leg at the ball and somehow found it’s way into the back of the net. An easy goal to conceede.

This spurred Lurgan on even more and with the change in formation they became more formidable up front, with Niall hitting the crossbar and Jack making the keeper work hard. After clearing a Newry corner Morgan was badly injured after a very debatable tackle and was taken off. Another rejig and off Lurgan went looking for the equaliser. It followed very quickly when Niall picked the ball up on the edge of the box stepped inside and chipped delicately over the keeper.

Newry had a player sent off for a second yellow after Niall and Jack played a 1-2 and as Niall went to receive the return ball was pulled back when he would have been through on goal. Lurgan tried to press home the man advantage but with time running out and some last minute desperate defending for Newry the game ended in a draw.

A hard physical game today which saw Lurgan display different qualities in coming from behind and the physicality of the game. It also saw a return from injury for Gary and Denver. MOTM was between Jay and Bailey.
Team: Eoin , Matthew, Travis, Oliver, Morgan, Adam, Jay, Bailey, Riv, Niall, Jack, Gary and Denver.
