Lurgan Town Under 13 Colts took on Newcastle at Havelock Park on Saturday 30th September 2017 in the Lisburn Shield. Newcastle were dangerous on the break and took the lead with a lob. Jake McMurray came close but the keeper tipped his effort over the bar. There were a lack of clear cut chances and the first half ended with Newcastle leading 1-0.
The good contest continued in the second half and Lurgan scored a deserved equaliser when Daniel Graham shot and Caolan Ritchie, with his back to goal, flicked the ball in with his heel. A really clever piece of skill by Caolan. Newcastle almost took the lead again but Toby Haire made a brilliant clearance and the game ended 1-1 at the end of normal time.
In the first half of the 20 minutes of extra time Newcastle took their opportunities very well and scored three times to take a 4-1 lead. Newcastle scored a fifth and sixth in the second half of extra time. Lurgan battled really well against a very good Newcastle team and – the game was closer for the majority of the game and much closer than the final scoreline suggests.
Ben Hendron had an excellent game at the heart of the defence The Lisburn league is definitely a higher standard than the league that the team used to be in but the boys have improved with every season in the past. They have had some good results so far this year and there are plenty of reasons to hope that they will continue to rise to the new challenge this year.
