Lurgan Town LL13s went into Saturday’s top of the table clash with Windmill full of confidence and with both teams having won their opening 3 matches someone’s 0 had to go.
It was a tight start to the game with both teams feeling their way into it. Windmill had the 1st chance when the winger squared a ball across the face of the Town goal only for the forward to shoot wide. That seemed to waken the Town boys up & Adhamh Towe won the ball in the middle of the park. He spread it out right to Jamie Stringer who found Murphy ahead of him he out paced a couple of defenders & fired in a great effort from the edge of the box only for the Windmill keeper to touch over for a corner.
From another Andrew Orr corner Town very nearly took the lead when Dylan Alexander’s header was saved but it caused a scramble with 3 efforts on goal from Suchonski, Towe & Murphy but somehow Windmill managed to clear the ball.
On 20 mins the dead lock was broken when Town won 3 corners in quick succession. 3rd time lucky you might say when Andrew Orr’s great in swinger was headed clear only for fullback Krisy Cassells to meet it 30 yards out with a swearving shot into the top corner that Phillippe countiuo would have been proud off.
1 nil up Town started to control things & could have been two up when Matthew McKee & Adhamh Towe both had shots saved but with a couple of minutes to go to half time it was Jamie Stringer who got the 2nd goal when Ethan Browne played a great pass down the right for Stringer to run on to. HE held of the challenges of 2 Windmill defender’s & rifled his shot into the roof of the net.
2 up was nearly 3 when Conan Moore released Andrew Orr down the left; he cut in side & fired a shot into the side net. Town went into the halftime break 2-0 up but knew that Windmill would be strong in the 2nd half with the wind behind them.
Town made afew changes at half-time bringing Whitmarsh on for Calvert in nets, Dylan Emerson on for Dylan Alexander up front & Jamie Stokes on for Conan Moore & within 2 minutes of the restart they should have killed the game off when Suchonski’s clearance found Murphy in the centre circle who’s quick turn & pass put Emerson away. He outpaced the defence, drew the keeper out & slid his shot past the keeper but it went narrowly wide. With the wind in their faces Town dug in & defended like lions & were playing the counter attacking game now & with 10 mins to go nearly got the 3rd goal when Emerson broke down the left, he squared it to stringer who found McKee just outside the box but he shot over.
Windmill were back on the press again & with 5 mins to go they got their goal. With the score now at 2 – 1 they were throwing everything at the Town defence, but Whitmarsh in nets was holding everything they fired at him. With 2 mins leaft he cleared to Luke Vennard who found Adhamh Towe on the halfway line. Ahamh took off on one of his great runs, out paced the Windmill defenders & lifted his shot over the advancing keeper to make it 3-1.
That’s how the match finished leaving the Town boys top of the league with 4 wins out 4. This was a superb team performance by all the boys well done lads .
