Saturday saw the U11 Predators in league action with a derby game against Lurgan Celtic at The Arena. It was a great opportunity to put a disappointing display last weekend behind them and so it proved as while the result didn’t go Town’s way their performance was one of the best this season so far.
After a fairly even opening with both sides trying to gain the upper hand Town began to assert themselves on their opponents. Trying out a new formation the boys looked compact and solid and were giving Celtic no time to settle. It was pretty much one way traffic as Town were creating plenty of chances with some great build up play and it looked like there was only going to be one team scoring however with their only meaningful attack of the first half Celtic took the lead. This spurred the Town lads on and they got back into the game on the stroke of half time with a great finish by Lewis Gordon following a superb cross by Daniel McIlmoyle.
Half time came at the wrong time for Town as all the momentum was with them and it gave Celtic a chance to re-group.
The 2nd half saw the game stretched as both teams sensed a win was there for the taking. The next goal was always going to be crucial and it fell to Lurgan Celtic. This didn’t stop the Town lads from pushing for an equaliser but the breakthrough wouldn’t come despite several great chances. The game was finished as a contest when Celtic capatalised on a rare mistake at the back to take a 2 goal lead.
All in all this was a hugely encouraging performance from the boys with plenty of positives to take from the game. The boys are adjusting well to the realities of playing at this level, with a premium on keeping clean sheets while also having to take any chances that fall their way.
