Girls Academy Review

girls under 11 1718On Friday night the U11 girls travelled to Armagh to play 2 non-competitive games against Annagh Utd and Armagh. U11 Coach Gary Beattie was pleased with the performances of the team that included a number of new girls getting their first taste of playing matches.
Later that evening it was the turn of the U15s who also played 2 games with the venue being Cheney Park, Banbridge. First up for Lurgan was Banbridge Town which Lurgan won with a hattrick from Alex McILwaine. The second game seen the girls play Camlough which they won with Alex getting her 4th of the night and Kelly Patterson calmly scoring. Jessica Pugh was in commanding form in Lurgan’s goal. Chloe Stewart, Amy Barton along with Ellie Beattie were excellent in defence, the midfield of Kelly Patterson, Ellie McBride, Jessica Greenlee and Rebecca Wilson played with commitment and skill. Alex McILwaine showed her talent by playing as a striker instead of her normal midfield position.
Finally the U13s played Killen Rangers in their first league game of the season on Saturday. The team started strong with Kayla McGrory giving Killen defence a tough time as she attacked with pace. However it was Amy Irwin who nearly give Lurgan the lead but her shot was tipped over. Lurgan’s defence of Chloe Stewart, Ellie Beattie and Kaitlyn Irwin were dealing with the majority of Killen attacks however Killen did take the lead in the first half. The second half Lurgan changed formation and attacked with more purpose. Katie Gilmore was unlucky not to score as the Killen keeper made an outstanding save, Alex McILwaine, Ellie McBride went close to equalising but it was left to young Chloe Gordon to score with a superb turn and finish. Then Lurgan took the lead when Kayla McGrory got the all important goal as she beat the Killen keeper to the ball to score the winner. Special mention to the younger players of the squad Ellie Beattie, Amy Irwin, Chloe Gordon and Tilly Douglas and debutant Nicole Owens for very good performances.
