The U17′ s first match of the season was against local rivals and newcomers to the Mid Ulster league Craigavon City. Lurgan Town grabbed the early initiative in midfield with Ryan Henry, Oliver Miller and quiet man Gary Judt making hard tackles and breaking the play up to feed our two wide men Alex Wheelan and Jamie McNeil. It wasn’t long before Niall McBride had his first drive at goal but unfortunately deemed offside. Lurgan once again had the ball in the net after hard work up front from Jamie McNeil and Niall McBride, for Alex Wheelan to poke the ball over the line but Alex came from an offside position.
Craigavon’s defence didn’t know how to handle Niall, Jamie’s and Alex ‘s pressing which led to Niall scoring the opening goal from a well placed shot in the far corner. Lurgan’s dynamic midfield and defence marshalled by Morgan Smyth and Jay McPolin were both outstanding and kept the Craigavon forward line at bay limiting them to a few shots from well outside the box and gobbled up by our keeper Joshua Pugh. Lurgan had many opportunities to increase the score, Jamie hitting the post with a back flick from a corner, numerous heading opportunities from corners and some fine blocks from the City defenders.
It wasn’t until the second half before Lurgan doubled their lead. Joshua Pugh grabbing the ball from a City cross to quickly release the ball up the pitch for Jack Corrigan to control it and battle his way past two City defenders to dink the ball over the approaching keeper.
Lurgan’s first game of the season and a 2-0 win. The team were determined, disciplined and showed the capabilities that their coaches know they have. Hopefully they will believe now what we have been telling them that individually they are good footballers but as a team they are superb. They all showed the qualities that we asked of them and it’s good to see that the drills in training are being carried into games. A big shout out to the parents who attended we could not do this without your support.
