It’s Irish Cup day at the Arena today with the 1st Team hosting Groomsport FC. The Bangor side play in Division 1C of the Northern Amateur Football League. The two sides have never met in competition so it really is an unknown affair.
Town take a break from league action, in which they have started brightly. They currently sit top of the pile with 4 games played, winning 3 and losing just the one. They have been in fine goal scoring form with 16 goals and in particular Kyle Cousins hitting the net on 7 occasions. Their opponents, on the other hand, have only played one game, going down 6-1 to league title favourites Bryansburn Rangers.
Town are aiming to reach the second round of the competition for the third time – 2009 v Strabane and 2016 v Laurelvale being the other two victories – but manager Chris Kelly knows it is a difficult task before them: “I don’t know much about Groomsport. I have done the usual checking of last season’s results and checking their club Facebook page. They look like a team in transition and most likely on the up with a lot of new signings over the season. Our experience of all teams playing out of the Amateur league suggests we are in for a tough game which we are relishing”.
Chris continued: “We are looking forward to a break from the league as we’ve had 4 games in the opening two weeks and another to follow on Tuesday night. That doesn’t mean we don’t care about the outcome. We want to win and get ourselves in the draw for the next round. We have a few players nursing injuries who miss out. Geoff Greenaway, Matt Hollis, Aaron Greenaway, Johnny Stewart, Michael Canning. However such is the depth of this years squad that we have all players available who featured in our 7-2 victory earlier in the week. I’ll certainly have a few selection headaches when everyone is fit. We would love to go a step further than last year – but our only focus is on today”.
Kick off is at 1.30pm at the Arena. Come out and cheer the boys on.
