The 1st team progressed to the second round of the Irish Cup for the second year in a row, but they made hard work of it today at the Arena. Opponents Groomsport pushed Town every bit of the way but it as the boys in yellow who came away with a 3-1 victory.
It took until the 6th minute for either team to create a chance with Graeme McCoy’s corner being headed onto the post by David Clarke. 15 minutes in and Town had started to string a few passes together. Gray and McCoy exchanged well but the ball wouldn’t fall kindly for Cousins up front. On 21 minutes Town were forced into a sub when Henry Warren picked up a knock. The experienced John Guy replaced him in the middle of the park. Town go lucky a minute later when Groomsport had the ball in the net, but the ref ruled it void for a foul on the keeper. Town had one more chance before the half, but the impressive quick feet was not matched by the shot.
Early in the second half, despite the strong wind in their faces Groomsport had two chances – a deflected shot over the bar, and a cross cut out by left back Adam Wing. On 57 minutes a great cross by John Guy was knocked back by David Hamilton but Kyle Cousins couldnt beat the keeper. 4 minutes later and Groomsport took the lead. A long ball eluded the Town defence and the striker rounded the keeper. 1-0. The lead lasted just 7 minutes. Another McCoy free kick caused panic in the Groomsport box and John Guy poked home for 1-1.
Town left it late to take the lead. On 89 minutes another McCoy free kick as turned in, this time off a Groomsport player. Town delighted to be 2-1 in front. On 93 minutes Henry Capper sealed it for Town. He picked the ball up on half way, headed straight for goal and finished well for his 6th in 2 games.
Another win for Town and into the second round of the Irish Cup. A good, but difficult, hard days work. Good luck to Groomsport for the remainder of their season.
