Lurgan Town 1st Team got the 2017/18 season underway with a hard fought home win over Tullyvallen today. Following a tough pre season the lads couldn’t wait to finally get back to competitive games and this fixture was always going to be a difficult one, but Town got the all important 3 points.
Lurgan started brightly and had the majority of possession in the first 20 minutes but it was Tullyvallen who took a shock lead. The away team seized the momentum change at this point and put Town under pressure but once again against the run of play another goal was scored. This time the Tullyvallen defender poked it past his own goalkeeper when under pressure from David Clarke. It remained 1-1 at half time.
Town again started brightly in the second half and debutant Henry Capper thought he had put Town ahead with a great solo effort but much to the bemusement of everyone at the Arena the referee ruled it null for an offside infringement from another Town player. Two minutes later and Town found themselves facing a penalty but another debutant, Aaron Kidd, pulled off a fantastic save to keep Town in the game. This gave Town confidence and new signing Kyle Cousins put the lads ahead for the first time when he charged a short back pass down and the keeper struck it off him to allow him the simplest of tap ins.
Tullyvallen threw everything at Lurgan after this but the home side stood firm and gave a professional performance to see the game out. Aaron Parks in particular marshalled the defence excellently with David Hamilton and Henry Capper looking dangerous with their speed going forward.
Town now move on to an away game against newcomers Dromore Amateurs on Tuesday night at Ferris Park, Dromore. Kick off is 6.30pm.
