Ladies Continue Impressive Start

Lurgan Town Ladies took on Bangor Ladies at the Arena, in a fixture that will be repeated in the League Cup Quarter Finals next month. And the home side will be hoping for a similar result in June, as they ran out comfortable winners tonight.

As the sun was setting low in the sky, the match was fairly even for the first 10 minutes, but then Lurgan Town hit a purple patch, scoring 4 goals in as many minutes! First, they beat the offside for Kerry Taggart to cooly knock it in off the left post, and then Tina Brush played Dani Creaney through to make it 2-0. A minute later Kerry closed down two defenders to score a half-volley for a third, before a low cross from Tina was diverted in by a Bangor defender. Tina then hit the post, before Bangor rallied and pulled a goal back when a deceptively high bounce was out of reach for keeper Emma McClements. But Lurgan’s 4 goal advantage was restored before half time when captain Tracy Orr scored a confident penalty after Bangor handled in the box.

Just two minute into the second half, and the Bangor keeper couldn’t keep out a well-taken free kick by young Niamh Ruddy, making it 6-1. A minute later, a free Bangor player had a run on goal but was denied by a diving save as Emma pushed it wide. Minutes later, a cross from Kerry was cleared only as far as Debbie Douglas who blasted it into the back of the net with her left foot. Bangor had another chance on goal denied by a double-save from Emma, before a series of passes between Kerry and Lauren Gibson ended with Lauren cooly taking it round the keeper for a goal on her birthday! Kerry finished the scoring with the last kick of the game, to make it 9-1 to Lurgan Town.

Manager Davy Hodgen is delighted with the ladies’ winning start to the season, with 3 wins from 3, 18 goals scored and only one conceded, and getting better in every game.

The next match is away to Valley Rangers (who won this division last year but missed out in promotion play-offs). So the Lurgan ladies will be hoping to continue to improve in Kilkeel (and the supporters will be hoping it doesn’t pour like it did in our cup match there last season!)
