Ladies Extend Lead At The Top

Match day 7 saw the girls travel to Killyleagh YC sitting at the top of the league going into the reverse fixtures. A much changed side from Mondays heroics against Mid Ulster was further changed when captain Tracy Orr wasnt feeling 100% to start the game. Step in Ciara Lynn who had spent the last number of hours travelling back from the USA. Also on the bench was new signing Trudi Harbinson who had travelled with Ciara. The girls made a slow start on a poor pitch at The Showgrounds, long grass and a stiff wind blowing down the pitch was never going to make for a classic.  The girls fashioned a few half chances but the home keeper either saved them or the shots went off target. At the other end Emma McClements carried on from where she left off on Monday with a number of vital saves to keep the score at 0-0. With 44 minutes on the clock the home side where awarded a penalty which their striker duly dispatched giving Emma no chance. This was the spark to ignite Town’s game and within a minute Lisa Goodman played the ball of the first half to Steph Potts who brought the sides level. Half time Killyleagh 1 Lurgan Town ladies 1.

The second half began with Trudi replacing Ciara to make her debut for Town. A few other changes to positions where made to give the girls some shape as they looked to settle and take the game to the home side. With 55 minutes on the clock Tina Brush gave the away side the lead, to further tighten their grip on the game. Orr replaced Laird after the goal taking her place at sweeper. 75 minutes in and Trudi scored her first goal for the club cutting into the box and unleashing a low firm drive past the keeper. 5 minutes later and the game was over as a quick throw in by Kerry Taggary was put into the box where Steph Potts won the ball and made it 4-1 to Town. Steph almost grabbed her hat trick in the dying seconds only to be denied by the keeper with another great save.. The game finished Killyleagh 1 Lurgan Town 4.

Manager Davy Welshman”We made a number of changes from Monday and rested players to ensure we where fresh for tonight’s game.. We never really settled into any rhythm and fair play to Killyleagh they made us work for the win. I have to pay special mention to Emma in goals who made 3/4 top class saves at vital times to keep us in the game and her handling and positioning was first class.. It was great to see Trudi finally in a Town shirt and we got a glimpse of the quality she will bring to the side, I’m sure her and Ciara will sleep for a week after their long journey from USA  then playing for us tonight. We now have a break until 20th July when Dromara are the visitors to The Arena and after their win tonight we will play them in the semi final of the league cup on a date to be arranged. “Many thanks to Valerie and the team from Killyleagh for their hospitality after the game”
