Lurgan Town Reserves hosted 2nd place Dungannon Rovers in the league on Saturday in the first ever meeting of the top 2 sides. What was billed as the biggest game of the season was somewhat of a one sided affair with Town putting 8 past their opponents without reply.
Town had some glorious chances before the deadlock was broken. Matt Irvine found himself one on one with the keeper but the young shot stopper saved well with an outstretched leg. Mark Lucas, making his debut for the reserves also had a great opportunity to grab his first senior goal but he made the wrong choice when he was also one on one with the keeper. Andrew Houston finally broke the deadlock with a fine finish and before long Town found themselves 3-0 up with Matt Irvine grabbing himself a brace. This is how it remained until half time.
In the second period Town continued their dominance on the game. The lads where first and second to every ball and they passed it with a confidence that has been missing for the last few weeks. Chances where created with ease and they added another 5 goals without reply. Matt Irvine doubled his tally to 4 and James McNally got himself one. Dungannon turned the ball into their own net on two occasions and Town also hit the woodwork on 4 occasions. Scott McBride in the Town goal did not have a save to make. Town oozed class all over the pitch and none more so than man of the match Geoff Greenaway who marshalled the defence superbly. This win keeps Town top with a now simple scenario against 3rd place Derryhirk Utd on Wednesday night. Win and they will be crowned league champions.
