The Swifts went into Saturdays game away to Seagoe without 7 players through injury or unavailability. This give the chance to bring 3 under 16 players along with a few more U19s.
Seagoe won the toss and played with the wind. They were soon on the attack when they tested Josh Pugh but Josh was up to the task as he tipped over the shot. The Swifts at times set to deep and invited pressure. Despite this the defence were dealing with the majority of the pressure. Seagoe had numerous corners without any joy however they almost took the lead but for the best goal clearance of the season came when Tim Millen threw himself in the way to block. This give the Swifts a lift as they should have took the lead when Simon Wilson played in Callum Watkins who played a pass to Niall McBride who missed from a couple of yards, as the ball deflected about the penalty area Tim Millen scored however it was disallowed for an offside. Sean McNally, Simon Wilson and Tim Millen were getting more control in midfield. The defence of U16 player Tom Leathem, Conor McCann, Gary Judt and Graham Bunting were superb. Unfortunately Bunty was carried off with a bad knee injury. He was replaced by U16 player Ben Cullen. H-T 0-0
Lurgan knew they would have the wind in their favour so they could play a more attacking game. Young Ben Cullen along with Sean McNally were very creative in midfield. The chances were coming Lurgan’s way with Niall and Tim having chances then Callum Watkins hitting the crossbar with a super strike. The all important goal came when Lurgan were awarded a free kick which Niall McBride found the top corner from 25 yards. A superb strike worthy of winning any game. Seagoe went in search for the equaliser but the found Blacoe, Judt, McCann and in particular Tom Leathem hard to get past. Young Tom put in 2 superb last ditch blocks. Luke Kerr was introduced for the sick Conor McCann and U16 player Jake Hegarty made his senior debut. In fact within seconds Jake had nutmegged his opponent and within minutes played a great pass and possibly should’ve scored a little later. Luke had a chance but shot over the bar. The second almost arrived for Lurgan when Ryan Blacoe’s curling shot smacked the crossbar. F-T 1-0
Overall it was a great team performance from the squad. Despite all the absentees the lads that came into the squad were super. All players can be proud but Millen, McNally, Wilson, McCann, Collen and Blacoe were very good. The joint players of the game went to Tom Leathem with a great display at right back and Gary Judt at centre half.
