Lurgan Town U15 Mid Ulster Team travelled to Holm Park to face Armagh acity in the first round of the Shield. With a lot of Saturday games off due to Storm Jorge it was a credit to both teams in demanding weather conditions.
Town nearly opened the scoring on four minutes. Campbell’s ball into the box fell to Kelly who hit the target but Armagh city keeper was up to the task. Minutes later Kelly had another great effort saved by the in form keeper. Lurgan kept playing the football switching play at every opportunity. Great one touch football played in Campbell who hit the cross bar.
In the 26 minute the Armagh City keeper was in action again and tipped over a great effort from Kelly. Just before half time Jack Mullins had a long range effect but again the keeper made a good save.
Town started the second half well and came close with a corner from Calum Carson but the Armagh City defence eventually cleared their lines. On the 45 minute the Armagh City keeper made the save of the game. Kelly again with another great effort but the keeper dived full length and made a great one handed save. Was it going to one of those days?
It was all one way traffic. Finally Lurgan got their deserved opener. Jake Agnew crossed the ball into the Armagh box it broke to Aaron Buck, and not for the first time today the Armagh keeper made a good save, but Jack Mullins reacted the quickest and made no mistake from close range.
A few minutes later Lurgan doubled their lead. James Green was put through on goal by Brown and calmly slotted the ball past the keeper. A great solo run from Ben Hendron nearly made it three nil but again the Armagh keeper saved well to his left. On the 56 minute Town were rewarded with a free kick 30 yards out, up stepped Hendron who drove a unstoppable shot into top left corner. It will definitely will be up there for goal of the month.
Tens minutes before the end Green got his second. Great work from Campbell who put it on a plate for Green to finish from close range. James Kelly got this deserved goal to make it 5-0. Two mins before the end Calum Carson should have made 6-0 but couldn’t hit the target.
A good clean sheet for the Town back 5 today. Under awful weather conditions the whole team played well and passed the ball well today. Special mention goes to Armagh Keeper who kept the scoreline down to 5-0.
