Lurgan Town Ladies kicked off their 2020 pre-season friendlies yesterday against a good Belfast Swifts side at The Arena.
The Ladies team had a few new faces from last years championship winning side, as well as a few young ladies, making the step up from underage level.
The game started with some poor passing and poor touches, which was not unexpect for both teams having their first run out of the year.
As the game settled The ‘Ladies’ started to move the ball around better. Some great link up play on the right side between the youngsters Jessica Pugh and Ellie McBride was proving a problem for ‘The Swifts’
It wasnt long before Ellie found some space on the edge of the Swifts box and was able to get a great shot away forcing the Swifts keeper to make a great save. Unfortunely for the keeper, it was followed up by debutant Sarah Shaw who made no mistake in slotting the lose ball home.
The next 10 mins Lurgan controlled the game not letting The Swifts out, with midfield trio of Roisin Bolger Leanne Dumigan and Amy McAllister picking up every second ball.
Both Roisin and Amy had shots on goal forcing good saves from the Swifts keeper. Swifts created a number of chances that had to be mopped up by a solid defensive performance from Tracy, Claire, Teah & Jessica, Ensuring the Ladies laid 1-0 at HT
Second half started frantic and fast with young Ellie McBride finding herself in space on the edge of Swifts box again, this time making no mistake with a smart finish to score her first senior goal on her senior debut.
5 mins later Ellie got onto a percision through ball causing the Swifts problems, resulting in her being brought down for a penalty. Up stepped Tracy, doing exactly what Tracy does best.
Credit to Belfast Swifts who fought hard and took advantage of a lapse in concentration within Lurgans defence and clawing one back.
The game settled a little again and a few chances created at both ends. Lurgans falling to Jess Woods, Leanne and JP.
The Ladies did enough to see the result out and finished a good run out 3-1.
An overall good performance by Lurgan with Jess Woods, Sarah Shaw, Ellie McBride & Jessica Pugh all making their senior debuts for the club.
Unfortunately Lurgan player Amy McAllister picked up a nasty freak injury at the end of the 1st half which required medical attention and a few stitches.
We wish Amy a speedy recovery and hope to see her back on the pitch soon.
We thank Belfast Swifts for travelling down for the game and wish them all the best for their season.
