Youthful Swifts Still Learning

The Swifts took to the pitch on Saturday with and average age of 17 as there were 12 senior club players missing. All but one player was 18 or under. There were senior league debuts Adam Vennard (15), Tom Leathem (15) and Luke Kerr (16) who all performed well.

Saturdays opponents were Newmills and another away game for the Swifts. The Swifts started the game positively but they were soon 2-0 down with a couple of defensive errors. Despite the setbacks the Swifts still played with composure. The midfield of Sean McNally, Simon Wilson and Tim Millen were winning tackles and showing a real desire to get back in the game. Lewis McKinley along with Sean were showing their creative abilities on the ball. The Swifts went close with Tim Millen having a shot blocked and a Lewis McKinley corner should have been scored. In defence Oliver Millar was focused and reading the game well and Josh Pugh made some excellent reaction saves. H-T 0-2

The Swifts can’t catch a break at the minute with any error being punished and another one allowed a third goal for Newmills. However, this didn’t deter the young Swifts team as the got on the scoresheet with Lewis and Simon involved as Blacoe was found in the box which he sold the defender a dummy then watched his shot saved but Tim Millen tapped in. Then another couple of errors witnessed another 2 goals for the home team. Luke Kerr was working well up top but just couldn’t get that final shot away.  F-T 1-5

The focus with this young squad is to get them involved in as many senior games as possible so they can gain experience. Even though no one likes to lose they are still learning even in defeat. Coach Phil felt there were more positives today with 16 year olds Alex Wheelan and Sean McNally getting the players of the game for the Swifts. There were good games for Oliver Millar and Simon Wilson. The 3 debutants all received 45 mins each today.
