Derby Win For U13s

Saturday saw the U13 Lurgan boys take on neighbours Oxford Sunnyside which proved to be a great game of football.

Lurgan town started the brighter of the two moving the ball well with some neat football and creating chances for the front men. The first clear chance of the game fell to Dobrowolski who found himself one on one with the Sunnyside keeper who came out on top with a fine save. Moments later Dobrowolski found himself in space with only the keeper to beat but again the Sunnyside keeper was showing his quality in saving well.

This seemed to spur Oxford on who then enjoyed a good spell of possession and on a couple of occasions got in behind but young McCann in goals was equal to everything fired at him. As the game came close to half time Lurgan took control again with Hawthorne causing havoc on the wing and beating his man to get the cross in with Gorman narrowly missing it. The pressure didnt stop there with Dillon, Davison and Hawthorne all coming close and unlucky not to score. Finally the breakthrough came when Dillon latched onto a rebound off the woodwork for a simple tap in.
Halftime 1-0

The second half started with Oxford controlling play but the impressive McCann was on top form dealing with everything. Oxfords pressure paid off though with a defensive mistake leaving the striker with a free shot at goal 6 yards out which he didn’t miss. This spurred the Lurgan men on and they found another gear. Young Sloane in right back was having a great game and won the ball well before slipping Dillon in who finished well with a first time shot.

The pressure from the Lurgan men didnt stop there and chance after chance came with Turkington coming close on one occasion and finding himself offside on another. The 3rd goal came with great work down the right wing and Krol delivering a superb cross which made it’s way to Davison at the back post who hit on the half volley with the Oxford keeper unable to keep it out. As the game seemed to be coming to a close Oxford got a 2nd after the Lurgan defender mistimed his jump and unfortunately headed past his own keeper. This gave the Oxford boys hope of an equaliser and they threw everything at town but the defence of Mercer and Hutchinson stood firm and held on for the win.

Best for town on the day were McCann,Gorman and Hawthorne.

Final score Lurgan 3-2 Oxford Sunnyside.

Lurgan Town would like to wish the Oxford keeper a speedy recovery on his broken hand injury.
