Lurgan Town Under 14 Colts took on Warrenpoint in a friendly game on Saturday 20th April, before the team head off to the Football Cup Barcelona April tournament on Thursday.
Football Cup Barcelona is an international youth football tournament for boys and girls, held in Salou and Cambrils area in the south of Barcelona.
Around 100 teams from 15 countries participate in the tournament. Some teams from Lurgan Town have participated at it in the past. Last year the Colts took part in a tournament in Blackpool. This is their first time taking part at the Barcelona competition.
Lurgan played some excellent football during the game with the highlight goal probably the one by Jack O’Brien where the team passed the ball out of defence, through the midfield and Joey Macdonald crossed for Jack to stab the ball home from close range. A brilliant team move.
Caolan Ritchie scored a goal from close range and then an excellent second for him when he lobbed the ball into the goal at the far post from a tight angle – a great finish by Caolan!
Daniel Graham also scored with a very good long range shot high into the net.
A new member of the group, Aaron Buck, was very impressive, looking good on the ball and putting in a number of very good and dangerous crosses.
James Green playing up front also scored 2 goals – the first after an excellent assist by Alex Banks who battled for the ball on the right wing and put James in. James then got a second with a brilliant hooked shot from the edge of the area.
Lurgan conceded 3 goals during the game but were comfortable winners and scored their seventh with an own goal by Warrenpoint.
Lurgan impressed with their play going forwards, to build on their good progress in recent months. Now off to Barcelona!
