U15s Secure Third Place

Town today secured third place finish in the league with one game remaining, the top two of Lurgan Celtic and Armagh City to play each other for the league decider. Fivemiletown travelled to the Lurgan to play the boys at Gordon Playing fields, Town continued their recent good form, starting the game brightly they took the lead early on when a pass from Ronan Watkins into the box took a deflection off one of the visitors and landed in the path of Spencer Young who controlled well to lose his marker and slotted past the keeper. Spencer continued to drive at the back line the entire first half dragging defenders left and right and the visitors were really struggling to cope with his movement, especially with James Maguire, Ronan Watkins and Spencer linking up so well on the left channel causing all kinds of problems but unfortunately could not turn the pressure into goals. Town at times looked nervy on the ball in the first half without ever being in much trouble and keeping the majority of the play high up the pitch. James Hamilton did pull off one last ditch save in the half when an opposition player spotted him just off his line decided to take a chance, James though was on his toes and tracking back was able to tip the shot over the bar to see Town carry the slender lead into half time.

The second half continued with Town controlling the game but looking a lot more comfortable when doing so and the football began to flow much better. The Lurgan boys stretched their lead when a corner from Ben Cullen wasn’t cleared from the opposition box bouncing around a number of player before landing at the feet of Adam Vennard who lashed it into the net from about 12 yards out. Town then went further ahead when Ben Cullen collected the ball in the middle of the park with quick thinking was able to slip Josh Johnston through on the right hand side and Josh with still some work to do drove the ball into the bottom opposite corner of the net out of the reach of the outstretched keeper. It was now all one way traffic with Ronan Watkins also getting on the score sheet when a Jake Turner shot was initially saved by the keeper with Ronan quick off the mark to pick up the lose ball and taking no chances buried it in the back of the net. Town almost went further ahead with a couple of close misses first from the head of James Maguire, then Mark Christie was only inches away when a ball came across goal and Ethan Gorman narrowly heading over the bar. Spencer Young wrapped up the day for Town when Tom Leatham won the race to a lose ball in the midfield, driving forward he found Spencer with a great pass, Spencer using his pace lost his man and finished in style with his second of the morning. Final score 5-0 to the Lurgan boys.

Another great team performance and attitude from the lads yet again. First half when despite being in control things just weren’t happening the way we would have liked, the lads kept driving on continuing to try and get into their stride never letting self frustration get the better of them. They came in at half time regrouped and took the second half by storm tidy at the back and troublesome every time they went forward with some great overlapping play in the channels and an understanding among the players which at times was a joy to watch. Well done yet again boys and now onto our last game of the season next week against Mountjoy.
