High flying Swifts picked up a 4-1 win on Saturday against Broomhedge. The Swifts had a 2 week break due to no allocated fixtures.
There were a few changes to the squad as central defender Jack O’Neill took the place of keeper Josh Pugh between the posts. Also, 3 U16 players were added to the squad with Cameron Purdy starting in the back 3, debutant David McNally when he came on for Adam Leathem who had a niggling injury and Josh Milne replacing Ryan Blacoe.
Red hot striker Callum Watkins got things up and running when he latched onto a headed pass from Morgan Smyth to score. The Swifts then lost concentration at the back to allow the opposition striker get a shot on target but an outstanding reflex save by Jack O’Neill pushed it over the bar. The Swifts got a second when Morgan Smyth was involved again as he played a great pass to Timmy Millen who played a good cross into that man Callum Watkins to score again. The Swifts were comfortably in control especially the back 3 of Adam Scorah, Morgan Smyth and Cameron Purdy as the played with composure to bring the ball out from the back. Lewis McKinley fizzed in a couple of good crosses but unfortunately there was no anticipation from Swifts players to attack. Timmy Millen almost got on the scoresheet but is shot was saved. H-T 2-0
The Swifts played against the wind in the second half and almost conceded within seconds of the restart but they managed to clear the danger. Goal number 3 arrived when Callum Watkins scored his hat trick goal when he collected an assist from strike partner Lewis McKinley. Lewis then should’ve scored but managed to hit over the bar. The fourth goal was scored again by Callum and assisted again by Lewis McKinley. David McNally was growing into the game with some nice touches. Jack O’Neill was making some excellent saves as Broomhedge pushed more players forward. Ollie Millar came on for Simon Wilson and looked comfortable on the ball. Aaron Winters moved to CDM and showed great work rate and desire to win the ball back. Ryan Blacoe was close to extending the Swifts lead but watched his shot get deflected wide. Then with 20 minutes left young Josh Milne was impressive as he almost scored then setup Callum Watkins but Callum somehow missed an easy chance. Then Josh was adamant he had scored his first senior goal as the keeper had spilled the ball over the goal line but the ref waved play on. In the final minutes Jack O’Neill unfortunately spilled a long range effort into the net which prevented him from having 2 clean sheets in 2 goalkeeping appearances. F-T 4-1
The Swifts team performance was good with all players deserving credit. However, a special mention to Callum Watkins who now has 16 goals for the season with 13 coming in the last 4 games. He had a tough first half of the season but he has been unplayable in the last 4 games. Cameron Purdy and Morgan Smyth showed great composure in defence with both having potential to be future first team players and finally Josh Milne who showed he has great talent. Well done Swifts.
