Girls Round Up

The U13 and U15 girls were in action this week.

It was the U13s up first as they took on Portadown in a cup match. Previously the girls had lost to Portadown 2-0 in the league however despite losing on penalties in this game the girls played well. The difference between the 2 teams was the Portadown keeper. The game finished 1-1 with Grace Mackay scoring the equaliser then almost got a winner with seconds left. The girls lost 2-1 when it went to penalties. Amy Irwin was successful with her spot kick. A special mention to 10 year old Jasmine Magowan as she saved 2 penalties. Players that stood out were Tilly Douglas, Olivia Campbell, Grace Mackay and Clara Adams.

The U15 girls took on Portavon for the second time in a week. Last weeks game finished 1-1 in wintry conditions. However, this time the Lurgan girls were superb in winning 10-2. The first half finished 4-1 with goals from Katie Gilmore 2, Ellie McBride and Molly McCaughey. In the second half Lurgan were more fluent in their passing game and this showed as they scored a further 6 goals. Maeve McConaghy was the most influential player in the second half. Lurgan were awarded a penalty which Maeve missed but this was only a minor set back as she went onto score 4 goals. The remaining 2 goals were scored a by Amy Irwin the youngest player for Lurgan Town. There were good performances throughout the team. Jessica Pugh (JP) was commanding in goal plus making some good one on one saves, defensively Amy Barton, Kaitlyn Irwin, Kayla Topley, Ellie Beattie along with Chloe Stewart were strong and compact. In Midfield Ellie McBride and Jessica Greenlee worked hard defensively and in attack. The front pairing of Katie Gilmore and Molly McCaughey were a constant threat as they showed great link up play along with goals. Kelly Patterson and Amy Irwin gave good performances when brought on. However, the 2 players that were selected as stand out players were Nicole Owens as she continues to perform to a high level each week. Also, Maeve McConaghy as she played in the centre midfield for the first time where she worked hard all over the pitch and scored 4 goals plus picked up a few assists.
