The Swifts had a break from league action on Saturday as they took on Banbridge YCOB Reserves in the Mid Ulster League Cup.
Despite Banbridge playing 2 leagues above the Swifts it was the Swifts taking the lead. Niall McBride missed a great chance but a minute later he dispossessed the Banbridge defender to strike from 25 yards over the keeper. However, Banbridge struck back with a powerful header from a corner kick to equalise. Lewis McKinley agonisingly watch his shot deflect onto the post then across the line into the keepers hands. Banbridge took the lead after a calamity of errors at the back resulted in a own goal. Lurgan can be a bit disappointed as they should’ve had a free kick just before the goal. Niall McBride was causing issues for the visiting back line and the referee with his speed as he was blew up for offside on a couple of occasions despite being onside. The Swifts equalised when Tim Millen set Ryan Blacoe down the left with a good pass which Ryan hit a great cross into the area for Niall McBride to sweetly strike a left foot shot past the keeper. H-T 2-2
In the second half Swifts seem to lose focus, composure and fight as Banbridge were taking control of the game. Banbridge YCOB took a 5-2 lead as the Swifts young squad made mistakes. A third goal arrived for the Swifts when another trademark Morgan Smyth run into the penalty area ended with him winning a penalty. Lewis McKinley stepped up to send the keeper the wrong way to score. The next goal was going to be important but it went the way of the visitors. F-T 3-6
The Swifts may have lost but weren’t disgraced as they were well in the game and a 6-3 score line doesn’t show a true reflection of the game. Overall YCOB deservedly won the game but they didn’t get it easy against the young squad.
