Lurgan Town U19s had their first away match in the league cup against Annagh United on Saturday.
The game kicked off and was a very scrappy affair with misplaced and hurried passes. Lurgan began with a 442 formation and soon became evident that the midfield were stretched at times as Annagh mainly launched high balls over the top, but between our defence and goalkeeper we were not overly troubled.
The highlight of the half being from a corner Morgan headed the ball powerfully towards the goal but only for the keeper to produce a one handed save to turn it around the post. The first half over Annagh were probably the better side but more from Lurgan’s errors rather than from open play.
At half time a raft of changes were made and the second half began better. Lurgan changed formation and began the second half on the attack. By playing through the zones and using the wings it wasn’t long before Niall had his first opportunity. The ball played over the top were he out muscled the centre half but fired narrowly wide. Jamie and Adam H both had opportunities again blocked or saved by the keeper.
Time was running out and the game looked to be heading for a draw. From an Annagh corner the ball was cleared out towards our 18yard line where Capt Morgan toed the ball past an oncoming attacker and drive deep into the opposition half. He slid the ball passed another Annagh defender and slotted the ball directly into Niall’s path, who timed his run between the two centre halves perfectly, and taking one touch to steady himself slammed the ball into the roof of the net. Nothing more than the boys deserved.
A match of two halves. Although the Annagh really didn’t trouble us we made life very difficult for ourselves.
