The Big Kick Off

Lurgan Town kick off the season tomorrow when the first team travel to Markethill Swifts for the opening league encounter. We caught up with manager Lee Dickson to get his thoughts on his debut season in charge.

On the season ahead: “I’m really excited to get the season finally underway, all the teams [in our league] seem to have went out and strengthened. One thing about Intermediate football, every game is competitive and anyone can take points off anyone regardless of their league position. Our expectations are simple, and has been from the moment the boys started pre season, deliver some silverware and do it by playing good exciting football. It doesn’t get much clearer than that!”

On pre season: “Pre Season has been great. The training and commitment from the players has been brilliant. On the fixture front the games were set up to challenge the players both physically and mentally, through the quality of opposition they would face. We played 4 games against teams above us. Yes we knew one or two of the results may not have went our way, but you learn a bit about your squad when you taste that first defeat. We had two games against teams below us which we won convincingly. In every game, regardless of the result, we competed for 90 mins and that’s all I can ask. It all came to fruition in the last game where we scored plenty of goals and kept a clean sheet, so it’s the perfect way to be entering the first league game”.

On the opening fixture: “They will be a strong team. One thing I’ve noticed about Markethill over the last two seasons, they never quit, they are a very resilient team and I’ll be drumming that into our boys, because in order to get a result up there we need to be on it for 90 mins”.

“On a final note, I want to mention the squad as a whole – coaches included. Their response to a few changes here and there has been brilliant and I couldn’t have asked for better to be honest. They are a great bunch of lads! Let’s go!”

Good luck to Lee, Paul and the guys for the season ahead. You can follow their game against Markethill on our Twitter page. Look for @lurgantownfc and the hashtag #heartonthesleeve. Kick off is at 2.15pm at Kilcluney 3G, Mowhan Road, Markethill.
