Lurgan Town Under 13 Colts travelled to Blackpool for the Blackpool Cup on the May Day Bank Holiday weekend, with teams attending from Northern Ireland, England, Holland and Wales. Matches were played at Fleetwood Town’s fantastic training facilities. The weather was phenomenal in Blackpool, sunny skies all day. The matches were very competitive and all the games were very close.
On the first day Lurgan defeated a Dutch team Sho FC 1-0 when Jack O’Brien put a ball through the middle. Stefan King was pulled back by a Sho defender but persevered and stabbed the ball past the onrushing keeper. Town also drew with Shamrocks FC and Heswall FC 0-0 and lost narrowly 1-0 to Mersey Boys FC and Woodford JFC. The defence were performing very strongly. There were very few clear cut chances throughout the day with the games very tight. In defence, newcomer Ben Cartmill made numerous very good saves and was consistent all day. The defending was excellent, especially another newcomer Ethan together with Jake and Toby – the boys made a lot of brilliant tackles, blocks and clearances.
On day two, in the first 2 games Lurgan lost 1-0 to Doveridge Juniors and then Sho FC 2. Many of the kids Lurgan played against over both days were mostly a year older due to the different age/birthday selection system used by the English teams. In their third game on day two, Lurgan played their best game of the weekend and deserved a win against Whitley Bay Sporting Club – they are a great bunch of kids and, despite some frustrating runs of the ball and narrow defeats, showed real character to put in such a great performance. Lewis Briggs came close with an excellent shot. In the last game, Lurgan lost 1-0 to Wapping Youth FC.
Some of the star performers over the 2 days were the goalkeeper Ben and defenders Ethan, Jake and Toby – only 5 goals conceded in 10 games. Across the team for both days the boys can be proud of themselves in how they performed. The boys worked hard, battled well in hot conditions and met a very competitive challenge with the teams they faced. It was a good experience for the boys and once again they showed their good character and fighting qualities. Next up is Wednesday cup final at Lurgan Town Arena. Everyone welcome.
