Town Reserves hosted Seapatrick Reserves in the league on Saturday, with the League title firmly in their sights.
Seapatrick had already been relegated from the division but they arrived at the Arena ready to play for pride. The two teams cancelled each other out for the first twenty minutes and the game was an even and hotly contested affair until Town got their noses in front.
Matt Irvine beat the offside trap to find himself one on one with the keeper. His shot was blocked, but the ever alert Jack Evans was on hand to slot home the rebound to put his team ahead.
Just before half time the lead was doubled as a stunning Andrew Houston overhead kick found the top corner. Half time 2-0.
From a Town point of view the second half was far from vintage. Houston, Irvine and Gray spurned chances to put the game beyond the reach of the visitors, and Seapatrick came into the game.
They pulled a goal back with a peach of a long range free kick with twenty minutes remaining, and then pressure was on Town to hold out for the win.
The lads managed to hold on for the precious three point despite great pressure from the visitors. As the final whistle blew news arrived from the AFC Silverwood and Craigavon City match where a draw meant that Lurgan Town had won the league!
An absolutely magnificent achievement for the lads to secure their second League title in three years, a deserved prize for the team, securing the title with two games remaining in the season.
The management would like to thank every player that has represented the team over the season, with many talented youth players making the step up to win their first medal at a senior level.
