Town Reserves took on Markethill Swifts Reserves in the league.
On a heavy pitch this game had the potential to be a tough encounter, especially since Markethill had gained a deserved point in the reverse fixture.
A young Markethill side were certainly up for the fight and the pace of the game was fierce in the opening half. Both sides forced several corners in the first twenty minutes but neither could make them count.
Town started to get their front men into the game with Stokes and Bunting playing it up to the exceptional Irvine. After twenty five minutes the big striker pulled wide and delivered a ball into the box that Houston rose to direct into the path of Luke Glenn who knocked it over the line to open the scoring.
Markethill responded well, starting to get on top in midfield and created a few chances. They capitalised with a stunning long range strike when Town didn’t clear their lines. But, just as the teams looked to be heading in all square, Irvine again battled to hold the ball up and laid it off to Houston. He got his head up to split the home defence with an inch perfect through ball to McNeill who drove it low past the keeper. Half time 1-2.
In the second half the pace didn’t relent, Markethill testing Kidd from distance, and putting him under pressure from set pieces but The Goalie was equal to everything. Gray, Evans and McIvor were introduced to give fresh legs on the heavy pitch and Town bossed the game from then on in. Adam Glenn played in the tireless Irvine who again found Houston. This time the striker crossed for Evans who controlled the ball and turned his man in one movement to smash home with his left foot.
Towns defensive desire saw the game out, with Freeburn and Bann commanding in the air, and Trainor and Adam Glenn providing tireless cover as Markethill threw four players up top.
This win secures a top two finish for the lads, but they still have more to fight for, starting with another three points this Saturday at the Arena, support would be appreciated by the lads!
