It was a tough 24 hours for the Lurgan Girls. The U15s played Banbridge Rangers on Friday evening and were unfortunate to loss 2-1. The girls went two behind very early in the game but got a goal back through a great finish by Maeve McConaghy. Lurgan were unlucky on a few occasions to get an equaliser. All the girls played with commitment. A special mention for Nicole Owens as she played her first full game and is growing in confidence each week.
Next up was a quarter final game for the U13s against Ballinamallard at Lurgan Town Arena. All the team had played for the U15s the previous night and it was plain to see early on the girls were struggling to get going. The first goal of the game went to Ballinamallard with a good finish. The Lurgan girls picked up their game in the second half and got an equaliser when Captain Chloe Stewart scored with a super header from a Maeve McConaghy corner. Lurgan had chances to win the game with Alex McILwaine, Ellie McBride and Maeve all going close. Then with a few minutes left U11 player Chloe Gordon was unlucky to see a shot go wide. The game finished 1-1 and went straight to penalties.
Unfortunately Lurgan lost the shootout as it swung back and forth with who had a chance to win it. Not a great way for the girls to lose a game that they probably shaded but that’s football. The girls still have a league to fight for so the girls can be proud of their performances on Friday night and then again Saturday. Good luck to Ballinamallard in the next round.
