The U13 Girls played Ambassadors at Craigavon City on Thursday night. It was the girls 7th game of the season and they were looking to collect a 6th win in the league.
Lurgan knew it was going to be a tough fixture against a team physically bigger. However that didn’t concern Lurgan a lot as they started brightly with Maeve McConaghy a constant threat on the right hand side. Lurgan took the lead when Kayla McGrory scored at the second attempt then Ambassadors scored an equaliser. Alex McILwaine along with Ellie McBride were controlling the midfield and were backed up by the superb defensive trio of Ellie Beattie, Kaitlyn Irwin and Captain Chloe Stewart. The first half finished one each.
After a few words of encouragement from Coach Phil the girls were outstanding in the second half with Kayla McGrory, Katie Gilmore and Amy Irwin playing with confidence. Maeve continued to attack Ambassadors with intent and was having a stormer as she teased and tormented the defence. Lurgan scored 4 quick goals with Katie Gilmore scoring a hat-trick and had chances for more plus Kayla McGrory got a second. Alex continued her casual nothing fazes her style of play in the centre of midfield as she shows an amazing footballing knowledge, when to drive forward, when to make the pass and when to slow the play down. However Ellie McBride is a perfect midfield partner for Alex with her attitude to win every tackle as well as looking to attack. Lurgan did concede a soft 2nd goal and withstood some late pressure from Ambassadors with Chloe Stewart and Ellie Beattie standing firm. The team won 5-2 to move joint top of the league which they can be proud of. On the night all the players played well. However, a special mention to the goal scorers Katie and Kayla as they have been lacking a little confidence lately but in the second half they were brilliant.
