Ladies Progress To Semis

Lurgan Town Ladies eased past Bangor Ladies into the semi-finals of the South 2 League Cup on a cold, damp evening at the Arena.
The home side started brightly, with Louise Kelly forcing a diving save from the Bangor keeper, and a shot from Kerry Taggart hit straight at the keeper.  Fifteen minutes in, and Kerry got past the keeper, but her shot was cleared off the line by a Bangor defender.  The resulting corner almost led to a goal, but Bangor showed some resolute defending and somehow the ball never crossed the line. Five minutes later though, and Kerry chased the ball down to the bye-line and crossed it back for Lana Black to score the opening goal.  Ten minutes later, and Kerry made another good run, this time going down the line and beating the Bangor off-side, where she crossed for Tina Brush to hit in from 5 yards out, making it 2-0.  Just two minutes later, and the Bangor keeper could only knock down a well-struck free kick by captain Tracy Orr, and Lana was there to hit the loose ball into the net for 3-0.  Only a couple of minutes later another cross in to the box was almost cleared by Bangor, but Lana got on the end of it, and got her hat-trick, making it 4-0 to the home side at half time.
Only two minutes into the second half, from a Bangor corner, one of their players hit it back over her head towards goal, and although Emma McClements got both hands on it, the ball edged over the line, to give the visitors some hope.  Bangor were energised by their goal, and as in the league game, they showed resilience, and never gave up.  But although they had a spell of more possession, they never really threatened the goal again, and even though Lurgan Town took their foot off the gas, it was the home side who struck again, when Lana played Tina through, who buried the ball in the net to make it 5-1. The team will now have to wait to find out who they will meet in the League Cup semi-finals, which will take place w/c 17 July.
The ladies have a free week next week, so manager Davy Hodgens will be expecting extra effort at training – for those who aren’t taking the opportunity for a holiday!
